Eucalyptus phenax is een mallee soort die wijdverspreid is in mallee scrubs in het zuiden van Australië, van het zuidelijke deel van de noordelijke tarwegordel van West-Australië nabij Bolgart, oostwaarts door de zuidelijke tarwegordel naar de Esperance subcoastal vlaktes, ook in Zuid-Australië in de Gawler Ranges, Eyre Peninsula , Kangaroo Island, Murray Mallee en oostwaarts naar de Little Desert en Sunset Country in het noordwesten van Victoria (maar niet in New South Wales). De bijnaam van de soort is van het Griekse phenax, bedrieger, verwijzend naar het feit dat deze soort jarenlang ten onrechte onder de naam E. anceps werd geplaatst.

Botanische beschrijving
Het is een mallee tot 7 meter hoog. Het vormt een lignotuber. De bast is meestal glad, crème tot grijs en koperachtig, soms met linten van afbladderende bast in de bovenste takken. De twijgen hebben olieklieren in de kern. De stengel is in doorsnede afgerond of vierkant.
De jonge bladeren zijn altijd gesteeld, tegenovergesteld tot knooppunten 4 tot 5 en dan afwisselend, eivormig tot lancetvormig of breed elliptisch, 4-8,5cm lang, 0,9-3cm breed, dof, blauwachtig groen tot groen. De volwassen bladeren zijn afwisselend, bladsteel 0,7-3cm lang. Het blad is lancetvormig, 5–12cm lang, 0,8–2,8cm breed, basis taps toelopend naar bladsteel, aan beide kanten dezelfde kleur, glanzend, groen, zijaders in een scherpe of bredere hoek ten opzichte van de hoofdnerf, dicht tot zeer dicht netvormig met onregelmatige aderen. De intramarginale ader is parallel aan en net binnen de rand, de olieklieren aanwezig.
De bloeiwijze is onvertakt okselstandig, steeltjes 0,3–1,8cm lang, 7 of 9 knoppen, sessiel tot kort gesteeld, steeltjes 0–0,3cm lang. De volwassen knoppen zijn cilindrisch tot eivormig (0,7-1,1cm lang, 0,4-0,6cm breed), groen tot rood of geelachtig, niet of slechts lichtjes geribbeld in de lengterichting op de bloembeker. Het litteken is aanwezig, operculum kegelvormig tot afgerond (0,3–0,6cm lang), meestal radiaal gestreept. De meeldraden zijn naar binnen verbogen. Kubusvormige tot wigvormige veelzijdige helmknoppen, aan de rug bevestigd, open door longitudinale spleten (niet-samenvloeiend). De stijl is lang, de stempel is stomp, 3 tot 5 locules. De bloemen zijn wit. De bloei is waargenomen in januari, februari, maart, april, mei, oktober en november.
De vrucht is sessiel of gesteeld, steeltjes 0-0,3cm lang, komvormig tot cilindrisch, 0,4-1cm lang, 0,5-0,8cm breed, in de lengterichting nauwelijks geribbeld. De schijf is aflopend, 3 tot 5 kleppen, bijna randniveau of omsloten. De zaden zijn roodbruin en glanzend, 1-2,5mm lang, afgeplat-eivormig, dorsaal oppervlak glad of ondiep netvormig, soms met kleine holtes, ventraal hilum.
In Victoria en Zuid-Australië onderscheidt Eucalyptus phenax zich van E. dumosa, E. cyanophylla, E. percostata en E. conglobata door zijn glanzende groene bladeren, en van E. pileata en E. caklcareana door kleinere knoppen en fruit.

Binnen sectie Dumaria behoort de soort tot een grote subgroep van nauw verwante soorten (serie Rufispermae, 37 beschreven soorten en ondersoorten) gediagnosticeerd door kliermerg in de twijgen, helmknoppen kubusvormig tot wigvormig en veelzijdig, en door de roodbruine en glanzende , platte zaden die uniek zijn voor de serie.

Zaai instructies
LENTE Selecteer de grootste en meest vlezige BRUINE zaden. Zaai de zaden op 2mm diepte in de Drainerende zaaigrond tussen 15-20°C. Tijdens het ontkiemen het substraat vochtig en in het daglicht houden. De zaden ontkiemen in 3-6 weken. De levensvatbaarheid van het zaad, bewaard onder goede omstandigheden, is 10 jaren.
