Uitleg
Het is een mallet die endemisch is in West-Australië en alleen bekend is van twee gebieden, in de buurt van Beaufort Inlet en Fitzgerald River National Park. De soort is vernoemd naar Ken Newbey (1936-1988). Ken Newbey was een boer, botanisch verzamelaar en ecoloog uit Ongerup in West-Australië. Hij was de eerste die deze soort verzamelde. Het groeit in goed gedraineerde, bijna neutrale leem of klei die over zacht gesteente ligt.

Botanische beschrijving
Het is een mallet tot 8 meter hoog. De lignotuber is afwezig. De bast is overal glad, geelbruin en grijs tot crèmegeel gevlekt en schilfert. De twijgen hebben geen olieklieren in de kern.
De juveniele bladeren zijn niet waargenomen. De volwassen bladeren zijn afwisselend, bladstelen 0,5-1cm lang. Het blad is smal lancetvormig tot smal elliptisch, 4-8cm lang, 0,5-1,5cm breed, basis taps toelopend naar bladsteel, rand is heel, top puntig, zelden afgerond en apiculaat. De zijaders staan in een scherpe of grotere hoek met de hoofdnerf, netvorming is matig tot dicht, gebroken, intramarginale ader dicht bij de rand, olieklieren onduidelijk of verspreid, zeer onregelmatig.
De bloeiwijze is onvertakt okselstandig, steeltjes naar beneden gedraaid, riemachtig, 3-5,5cm lang. Er zijn gewoonlijk 7 knoppen per scherm, zelden 3 of 9, sessiel tot bijna sessiel. De volwassen knoppen zijn langwerpig, 5,2-6cm lang, 1,1-1,6cm breed, litteken aanwezig (buitenste operculum wordt vroeg afgeworpen), operculum hoornvormig, circa 3-4 keer zo lang als de bloembejer, basaal verwijd, glad. De meeldraden zijn rechtopstaand, helmknoppen smal langwerpig, veelzijdig, aan de rug bevestigd, open door longitudinale spleten. De stijl is lang en recht, de stempel is afgerond. De bloemen zijn geelgroen.
De vrucht is op naar beneden gedraaide steeltjes, zittend, klokvormig tot omgekeerd kegelvormig, 1-2,7cm lang, 1,8-2,8cm breed, openend door elliptische gaten gevormd wanneer de 3 kleppen langs de hechtingen splitsen, maar verbonden blijven door de stijlbasis. Deze verbinding verweert echter uiteindelijk en de gaten smelten samen. De schijf bedekt de kleppen. De zaden zijn zwart, 1,5-4mm lang, eivormig tot hoekig, dorsaal oppervlak ondiep netvormig, hilum ventraal.

De Geslacht: Eucalyptus Ondergeslacht: Symphyomyrtus Sectie: Bisectae Ondersectie: Hadrotes Serie: Lehmannianae Onderserie: Liberae heeft de volgende kenmerken: De zaadlobben grof in tweeën gedeeld zijn, knoppen een operculum litteken hebben, een lang (binnenste) operculum en rechtopstaande meeldraden, fruit is groot, dik omrand en wordt stevig vastgehouden. Er zijn 12 soorten in onderafdeling Hadrotes, twee soorten hebben olieklieren in het merg, terwijl 10 soorten deze olieklieren missen.
Nuttige plant
Het is een uitstekende nectarproducent, maar het hout heeft geen commercieel nut. Deze siersoort heeft potentieel voor meer teelt in tuinen en parken en voor schaduw en beschutting.

Zaai instructies
LENTE Selecteer de grootste en meest vlezige ZWARTE zaden. Zaai de zaden op 2mm diepte in de Drainerende zaaigrond tussen 18-22°C. Tijdens het ontkiemen het substraat vochtig en in het daglicht houden. De zaden ontkiemen in 3-6 weken. De levensvatbaarheid van het zaad, bewaard onder goede omstandigheden, is 10 jaren.
