Description
Du latin orbi, rond et folia, feuille en référence à la forme des feuilles adultes. C'est un mallee d'occurrence dispersée et disjointe, présent dans les champs aurifères de l'Australie occidentale et du centre de l'Australie. Il est associé aux affleurements granitiques entre Paynes Find, Koolyannobbing et Menzies mais également au nord-est de Kalgoorlie, vers Rason Lack ainsi que plus au nord dans la chaîne montagneuse Dean. Au nord de l'Australie on le trouve au Wooddroffe Mount. Dans le sud du Territoire du Nord, il est présent à l'ouest de Mount Bearteaux, de Krichauff Chains et MacDonnell Chains. Il pousse dans des sols sablonneux acides dont le sous-sol est granitique. Il peut s'adapter à différents climats ainsi qu'à différentes compositions de sols, à l'exclusion des zones tropicales et des sols alcalins.

Description botanique
Il est un mallee et possède un lignotuber d'où son tronc multiple est issu. L'écorce est rugueuse et grise sur les grosses branches, épaisse et squameuse, elle est différente sur le tronc et les branches plus fines, elle est brun rougeâtre et se desquame en fine bandes, le terme utilisé pour la définir est « minirichi ».
Les feuilles adultes sont sub-opposées à alternes, pétiolées sur 0,8 à 2,4cm de long. Elles sont largement elliptiques à obovales ou obcordées, mesurent 2,5 à 5cm de long pour 1,3 à 5cm de large. Base atténuée au pétiole, apex arrondi ou apiculé. Elles sont concolores, ternes, grises à vertes, parfois d'un blanc cireux. Réticulation très dense, nervure intra-marginale éloignée du bord. Présence de glandes sébacées.
L'inflorescence axillaire non ramifiée est pédonculée sur 0,5 à 2cm de long. 3 à 7 bourgeons pédicellés sur 0,3 à 0,8cm. À maturité ces bourgeons sont globuleux à légèrement ovoïdes, mesurent 0,8 à 1,3cm de long pour 0,6 à 1,2cm de large. Glauques, cicatrice présente, opercule généralement arrondi, parfois apiculé ou élargi en forme de cône, très rarement becqué. Les étamines sont obliques, les anthères oblongues, polyvalentes, dorsifixées, déhiscente par fentes latérales. Style long, légèrement courbé. Stigmate émoussé ou effilé. 4 à 5 locules. Fleurs jaunes.
Le fruit est glauque, pédicellé sur 0,1 à 0,8cm de long, il mesure 0,3 à 1cm de long pour 0,8 à 1,5cm de large. Disque parfois surélevé. 4 à 5 valves fortement exsertées. Les graines d'un brun pâle, mesurent 1 à 1,7cm de long, aplaties-ovoïdes à cuboïdes aux angles arrondis. Surface dorsale légèrement réticulée. Hile terminal obscur.

Le Genre: Eucalyptus Sous-genre: Symphyomyrtus Section: Bisectae Sous-section: Destitutae Serie: Curviptera Sous-serie: Orbifoliae ayant les caractères suivants : Les bourgeons ont deux opercules, les cotylédons sont en forme de Y et les rameaux n'ont pas de glandes sébacées dans la moelle. Dans cette sous-section Eucalyptus orbifolia est en série Curviptera, l'une des quelque 30 espèces et sous-espèces étroitement apparentées qui se caractérisent en outre par de gros bourgeons en ombelles d'un, trois ou sept, des filaments staminaux dressés ou obliques (rarement inflexés) en bourgeon, et de gros fruits généralement avec un disque ascendant et des valves exercées.
Plante utile
Cette espèce remporte un large succès en tant que producteur de pollen pour l'apiculture et en tant que bel arbre ornemental. Son tronc rouge brun contraste avec son feuillage gris et ses fleurs jaunes.
