Description
Il doit son épithète au latin socialis, amical, en référence à sa présence en compagnie de plusieurs autres espèces. Il est largement présent dans les étendues de Mallee du sud de l'Australie, dans les nombreux sites désertiques au nord-ouest de Pilbara, également dans la région centre de l'Australie ainsi que dans le Queensland.

Description botanique
C'est un mallee a multiples tiges tige et il forme un lignotuber. Son écorce est lisse ou fibreuse et feuilletée sur les troncs inférieurs. De couleur blanche à gris clair ou brun cuivré pâle.
Les feuilles juvéniles sont sessiles à peu pétiolées, opposées puis sub-opposées et enfin alternes sur quelques nœuds. De forme ovale à lancéolée ou elliptiques, elles mesurent de 4 à 8cm de long pour 1,8 à 4,2cm de large, et sont généralement vert terne à gris-vert et rarement glauque. Les feuilles adultes sont alternes, le pétiole de 1 à 3cm de long, le limbe est lancéolé. Elles mesurent de 5 à 14cm de long pour 1 à 2,2cm de large, la base est légèrement atténuée au pétiole. Elles sont concolores, vert terne ou gris-vert, les nervures latérales sont à angle aigu, densément réticulées.
L'inflorescence axillaire est non ramifiée, pédoncule mesurant de 0,4 à 2,3cm de long. Elle supporte 9 à 13 bourgeons. Ceux-ci à maturité sont de forme ovoïde à fusiforme et mesurent 0,8 à 1,7cm de long pour 0,3 à 0,5cm de large. De couleur vert crémeux, rarement glauque. La cicatrice est présente, l'opercule est conique en forme de bec ou de corne, les étamines inflexées à fléchies, anthères adnées ou latérales, style long, stigmate effilé, 3 à 4 locules. La floraison est constatée quasiment tout au long de l'année exceptés mars et avril.
Les fruits pédicellés sont de forme urcéolée à tronquée, ils mesurent de 0,4 à 0,9cm de long pour 0,4 à 0,8cm de large. Disque descendant, 3 ou 4 valves. Les graines sont grises à brun-rougeâtre ou marron, elles mesurent de 1,5 à 2mm de long, de forme ovoïde à ovoïde-aplatie, surface dorsale lisse, parfois sillonnée, hile ventral.
Quand on trouve Eucalyptus socialis, dans le grand désert de Victoria, il est en présence de 2 espèces étroitement apparentées, Eucalyptus vokesensis et Eucalyptus wyolensis. Eucalyptus socialis possède 3 sous-espèces, celle étudiée dans la présente fiche est très répandue en Nouvelle Galles du Sud, en Australie Méridionale, elle peut être glauque ou pas, mais a toujours des feuilles ternes. Elle se distingue de Eucalyptus socialis subsp viridans par ses feuilles adultes vert terne et de Eucalyptus socialis subsp victoriensis par sa plus petite quantité de bourgeons et de fruits.

Dans cette sous-section Eucalyptus socialis ssp socialis fait partie de la grande série taxonomique Subulatae caractérisée en outre par des anthères globoïdes basifixées, des graines grises lisses avec des sillons longitudinaux peu profonds et des fruits avec des restes de style persistants. La série Subulatae est principalement divisée en quatre sous-séries basées sur les feuilles juvéniles. Sous-série Decussatae à feuilles de semis décussées non décurrentes.
