Description
Cette espèce est originaire d'Asie occidentale, de la Turquie à Israël et du Sinaï, à l'est de l'Irak et de l'Iran. Cette espèce est présente sur les pentes rocheuses calcaires et ignées, les pentes schisteuses et sablonneuses, les éboulis, les jachères, dans les maquis à Quercus, la steppe à Artemisia, parmi les Cèdres, à 550-2600m d'altitude.

Description botanique
C'est une plante herbacée vivace, formant un tapis, avec un porte-greffe ligneux. Les tiges sont dressées, non ramifiées, de 12 à 55cm, généralement glandulaires-pileuses à villeuses, surtout au-dessus, rarement glabres, parfois avec des poils dendroïdes.
Les feuilles sont simples, rarement avec 1-2 paires de petits lobes basaux, largement ovales-elliptiques à suborbiculaires, 2-4,5 x 1-3,5cm, rugueuses, crénelées, avec un indumentum dense de poils dendroïdes à dendroïdes-stellaires. Le pétiole mesure 1,5 à 6cm.
Les verticillasters sont de 4 à 10 fleurs, généralement distantes. Les bractées sont largement ovales, environ 15 x 10mm. Les bractéoles sont présentes. Les pédicelles sont de 2 à 4mm, érecto-patents. Le calice est campanulé, d'environ 15mm à environ 17mm dans le fruit et s'élargit, peu à densément glanduleux-pileux ou villeux, violacé-violet, rarement vert-jaune. La lèvre supérieure est indistinctement trilobée. La corolle est violet violacé, rarement blanche, d'environ 18mm. Le tube est droit, environ 12mm, annelé. La lèvre supérieure est droite.
Les nucules sont trigones arrondies, 3,5 x 3mm, brun foncé.
Cuisine
La plante est utilisée comme condiment pour le thé ou est préparée sous forme de thé dans de l'eau bouillante. Les feuilles aromatiques sont un bon substitut de la sauge commune (Salvia officinalis) en cuisine.
Plante médicinale
Les parties aériennes de la plante contiennent des huiles essentielles et sont utilisées comme antiseptique et pour soigner les plaies. L'huile essentielle des feuilles et des tiges contient du 1,8-cinéole, du camphre et de l'alpha-pinène comme principaux constituants. Il a été démontré que la plante a une activité antituberculeuse, antivirale et cytotoxique.

PRINTEMPS Tremper dans de l'acétone avec 0,1% Acide gibbérellique GA3, juste recouvrant les graines, pendant 5 min puis laver abondamment à l'eau courante du robinet. Semer les graines en surface sur du Terreau drainant pour semis entre 15-20°C. Pendant la germination garder le substrat humide et à la lumière du jour.
La viabilité des graines, gardées sous des bonnes conditions, est 2 ans.
