Description
Son épithète vient du latin ‘petrensis’ qui signifie ‘trouvé parmi les rochers’, se référant à son habitat préféré. C'est un mallée endémique de l'Australie occidentale, que l'on trouve dans le parc national de Yalgorup au sud de Perth, au nord de Seabird et de l'île Wedge, sur des sites calcaires strictement côtiers.

Description botanique
C'est un mallée de 3m de haut. Il forme un lignotuber. L'écorce est lisse partout ou rugueuse sur les arbres adultes, seulement à la base avec quelques rubans persistants. L'écorce lisse est gris pâle et brun pâle. Les tiges juvéniles ont une coupe transversale arrondie.
Les feuilles juvéniles sont toujours pétiolées, opposées pour le nœud le plus bas seulement puis alternes, ovales, et mesurent 4,5 à 11cm de long pour 3 à 5cm de large, vertes à gris-vert, ternes. Les feuilles adultes sont alternes, pétiolées sur 0,8 à 2,5cm de long. Le limbe est lancéolé et mesure 7 à 12,7cm de long pour 1 à 2,8cm de large. La base est atténuée au pétiole, bord entier, apex pointu, le limbe est concolore, vert moyen, généralement luisant, réticulation dense. La nervure intramarginale est proche de la marge.
L'inflorescence est axillaire non ramifiée, les pédoncules sont dressés à étalés, de 0,4 à 1,5cm de long, 9 à 15 bourgeons, pédicellés sur 0,2 à 0,4cm de long. Les bourgeons matures sont ovoïdes (1 à 1,5cm de long pour 0,4 à 0,6cm de large), hypanthium nervuré ou lisse. La cicatrice est présente (opercule externe détaché précocement), opercule en bec. Les étamines sont infléchies, les anthères cuboïdes, polyvalentes, sous-basifixées, déhiscentes par des fentes longitudinales. Le style est long et droit, le stigmate plus ou moins émoussé, 3 ou 4 locules. Les fleurs sont blanc crème.
Le fruit est pédicellé sur 0,2 à 0,4cm de long, généralement tronqué-globuleux, côtelé, ridé ou lisse, de 0,5 à 0,8cm de long pour 0,7 à 1cm de large, avec un bord épais. Le disque est descendant verticalement, à 3 ou 4 valves, élancées et proéminentes mais fragiles. Les graines sont gris-brun à brunes, de 1 à 2,5mm de long, ovoïdes ou aplaties-ovoïdes, la surface dorsale est lisse à très peu réticulée, le hile est ventral.

Dans cette sous-sous-sous-sous-sous-section Eucalyptus petrensis appartient à un groupe d'espèces de maillet et de mallee caractérisées par des inflorescences souvent pendantes avec des bourgeons ovoïdes pédicellés avec un opercule conique à bec, des fruits aplatis-globuleux avec des valves fragiles et des feuilles adultes qui sont vertes, densément réticulées et ont nombreuses glandes sébacées intersectionnelles et écorce lisse. Ces maillets et mallettes forment ensemble la série Falcatae sous-série Rugatae.

PRINTEMPS Sélectionner les graines BRUNES les plus grosses et les plus charnues. Semer les graines à 2mm de profondeur dans le Terreau drainant pour semis entre 15-20°C. Pendant la germination garder le substrat humide et à la lumière du jour. Les graines germent en 3-6 semaines. La viabilité des graines, gardées sous des bonnes conditions, est 10 années.
