Description
L'épithète de cette espèce vient du latin neutrus, moyen ou ni l'un ni l'autre, en référence à sa position morphologique entre Eucalyptus flocktoniae et Eucalyptus transcontinentalis. C'est une espèce d'occurrence éparse dans la ceinture de blé du centre-sud en Australie-Occidentale, de l'ouest du lac King vers Corrigin et vers le sud jusqu'à la région de Jerramungup.

Description botanique
C'est un mallée de 6m de haut qui forme un lignotuber. L'écorce est lisse partout, grise sur crème à brun à rose saumon à cuivré (rarement jaune). Les rameaux sont souvent légèrement glauques. La tige est carrée à arrondie en coupe transversale, et glauque.
Les feuilles juvéniles sont opposées, puis alternes plus haut dans la tige, sessiles à peu pétiolées, ovales à lancéolées. Les bases des feuilles inférieures sont décurrentes sur la tige, devenant arrondies à effilées plus haut dans la tige, bord entier, apex pointu, elles sont longues de 3,5 à 8cm, larges de 1,8 à 4cm, et glauques. Les feuilles adultes sont alternes, pétiolées sur 1 à 2cm de long. Lancéolées, longues de 5 à 11cm, large de 1 à 2cm, base atténuée au pétiole, concolores. Les jeunes feuilles sont bleu-vert terne à parfois légèrement glauques, devenant brillantes à vert légèrement brillant avec l'âge. Réticulation dense, parfois obscure. Nervure intramarginale parallèle à et proche du bord.
L'inflorescence est axillaire non ramifiée, sur pédoncules de 0,5 à 1,3cm de long. 7 bourgeons, rarement 9, pédicellés sur 0,3 à 0.6cm de long. Les bourgeons matures sont plus ou moins ovoïdes (1,1 à 1,7cm de long, 0,3 à 0,6cm de large), glauques. Cicatrices présentes, opercule becqué à corné (0,7 à 1,2cm de long). Les étamines sont infléchies, les anthères polyvalentes, basifixées, globoïdes, déhiscentes par de larges fentes. Le style est long, stigmate effilé, 3 ou 4 locules. Les fleurs sont jaune pâle à blanches.
Le fruit est pédicellé sur 0,2 à 0,5cm de long, en forme de tonneau à tronqué-globuleux, rarement en forme d'urne, parfois glauque, il mesure 0,5 à 1cm de long, 0,5 à 0,8cm de large. Le disque est descendant, 3 ou 4 valves, fortement exsertes (présence résiduelle de style). Les graines sont brun brillant à gris, longues de 1,2 à 2mm, ovoïdes ou aplaties-ovoïdes, rarement pointues à une extrémité, surface dorsale parfois creusée de sillons longitudinaux peu profonds sinon lisse. Hile ventral.
Cette espèce fait partie de la sous-série Decurrentes. Au sein de ce groupe, elle est étroitement liée à Eucalyptus transcontinentalis (toujours bien formé) et Eucalyptus moderata (à l'écorce rugueuse sur les troncs inférieurs). Eucalyptus neutra est également proche de Eucalyptus flocktoniae, qui se distingue par ses rameaux non glauques, ses bourgeons et ses fruits.

Dans cette sous-section Eucalyptus neutra fait partie de la grande série taxonomique Subulatae caractérisée en outre par des anthères globoïdes basifixées, des graines grises lisses avec des sillons longitudinaux peu profonds et des fruits avec des restes de style persistants. La série Subulatae est principalement divisée en quatre sous-séries basées sur les feuilles juvéniles. Sous-série Subulatae à feuilles de semis décussées et décurrentes.

PRINTEMPS Sélectionner les graines BRUNES les plus grosses et les plus charnues. Semer les graines à 2mm de profondeur dans le Terreau drainant pour semis entre 15-20°C. Pendant la germination garder le substrat humide et à la lumière du jour. Les graines germent en 3-6 semaines. La viabilité des graines, gardées sous des bonnes conditions, est 10 années.
