Acacia glaucoptera       2937

Author: George Bentham (1800-1884)
Family: Fabaceae Subfamily: Caesalpinioideae Tribe: Acacieae
Genus: Acacia Subgenus: Phyllodineae Section: Acacia
English name: Flat wattle
Zone: Australia

Description
The epithet of this species means with blue-green wings, with a reference to the phyllodes. It occurs from near Narrogin, south to near Manypeaks (circa 35km due northeast of Albany) and east to Israelite Bay (circa 180km due east of Ravensthorpe), southern Western Australia. It grows in clay and gravelly soils in woodland, tall shrubland and Mallee communities.

Botanical Description
It is a prostrate or erect shrub to 1.5m high. The branches are often somewhat gangling. The branchlets are straight to slightly flexuose, glabrous. The stipules are persistent or caducous.

The phyllodes are continuous with the branchlets, bifariously decurrent and forming opposite wings with each one extending to the next below, usually 2.5-7cm long and 0.6-2cm wide, occasionally undulate, coriaceous, glaucous, glabrous except axils densely tomentulose. The free portion of the phyllode is usually 1-4cm long, acute to shortly acuminate, with main nerve evident. The gland is not prominent.

The inflorescences are rudimentary, 1-headed racemes with axes to 0.5mm long. The peduncles are 3-18mm long, glabrous, often patent or descending in fruit. The heads are globular, 5-6mm in diameter, 30-80-flowered, golden in color. The flowers are 5-merous. The sepals are free. The petals are nerveless.

The pods are somewhat irregularly coiled and twisted, subterete to compressed, to 2cm long, 2-3mm wide, thinly crustaceous, black, glabrous. The seeds are longitudinal, oblong, 2.5-3.5mm long. The aril is terminal, conical.
Member of
The Genus: Acacia Subgenus: Phyllodineae Section: Acacia having the following characters: Trees or shrubs, sometimes prostrate. Branches unarmed. stipules normally present and scarious, rarely spinose. Leaves bipinnate or more commonly modified to polymorphic phyllodes, rarely reduced to scales or absent. Inflorescences simple or racemose, sometimes paniculate; flowers arranged in heads or spikes; heads without an involucel on the peduncle; flowers without a gynophore.

Subgenus Phyllodineae contains about 950 species, the majority of which are confined to Australia; it is estimated that there are at least 50 additional, as yet undescribed species.

This is the largest group within subgenus Phyllodineae. It is widespread in Australia with the most species-rich areas occurring south of the Tropic of Capricorn in the temperate and adjacent semiarid areas of eastern, southeastern and south-western Australia; the section is poorly represented in the tropical/sub-tropical north of the continent. There are no indigenous species of section Phyllodineae occurring outside Australia.
Useful plant
This species has very ornamental foliage. Some dieback of foliage can occur, but plants responds well to pruning, which promote the brightly coloured new growth.

Sowing instructions
SPRING Soak the seeds in warm water of 210,2°F for 1min. Change by ambiant water for 12h. Sow the seeds at 5mm depth in the Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 64-72°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks.
The average seed weight is 255,1 per gram (0,00392g).
The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 10 years.
