Botanical Description
It is a small mallee and forms a lignotuber. Its bark is gray-brown, smooth over the entire trunk, with ribbons of light brown or reddish gray desquamation. The stems are rounded in cross section, glaucous or not.

The juvenile leaves are always petiolate, alternate, ovate to broadly lanceolate, they measure 4 to 7cm long and 3 to 4.5cm wide, dull, bluish green or slightly glaucous. The adult leaves are alternate, petiolate from 1 to 3cm long, ovate to lanceolate, they measure 5.5 to 9.5cm long and 1.5 to 3cm wide. Base tapered to the petiole, entire margin, pointed apex, they are concolorous, dull, blue-green. The reticulation is dense, the intramarginale vein is close to the margin.

The axillary inflorescence is unbranched, pendulous, pedunculate. It measures 2 to 11.5cm long. The buds, 3 in number, are pedicellate (pedicels 2.5 to 6.5cm long). At maturity they are ovoid, measure 3.2 to 6cm long and 1 to 3cm wide, rarely globular, glaucous or not, longitudinally ribbed, scar present, operculum beaked. The outer stamens are oblique, inner stamens inflexed, anthers cuboid, versatile, dorsifixed and dehiscent longitudinally. Long and generally straight style. Stigma tapering, 4 to 5 locules. The flowers have red, pink or yellow staminal filaments, the anthers are always yellow.

Fruit on rigidly down-turned peduncles, pedicellate (pedicels 1.5-6 cm long), usually obconical, sometimes glaucous, always with several prominent longitudinal ribs. It measures 2.5 to 4cm long and 3 to 5.5cm wide. Concave disc. 4 to 5 valves. The brown seeds are 3-6mm long, obliquely pyramidal with prominent ridges and an asymmetric marginal flange. Dorsal surface smooth, shallowly reticulate, terminal hilum.
Member of
The Genus: Eucalyptus Subgenus: Symphyomyrtus Section: Bisectae Subsection: Destitutae Serie: Curviptera Subserie: Xylocarpae having the following characters: The buds have two opercula, cotyledons are Y-shaped and branchlets lack oil glands in the pith. Within this subsection Eucalyptus pyriformis is in series Curviptera subseries Xylocarpae, one of about 17 closely related species and subspecies which are further characterised by having large buds in umbels of one, three or seven, staminal filaments erect or oblique (rarely inflexed) in bud, and large fruit usually with an ascending disc and exserted valves.
Useful plant
Its wood is little used although it is hard, except for firewood. This eucalyptus is used for the production of honey as well as its pollen and the nectar of its fruits. Its rapid growth in the early years means that it is cultivated extensively, it remains a little sensitive to cold during this period. Very ornamental, it will often be planted in public and private gardens. Its flowers and fruits are widely used in floral art. It is cultivated in California and New Zealand.
