Acacia lasiocarpa var lasiocarpa       2021

It is a compact or open shrub from 0.3-1.5m high. The spines are few or numerous, 3-12mm long, sometimes absent. The branchlet indumentum is variable, the hairs patent, antrorse or retrorse, sometimes appressed.

There is 1 pair of pinnae 3-10mm long, each bearing 4-6 pairs of pinnules, 2- 3mm long, 0.5- 1 mm wide, usually green, usually revolute, glabrous or puberulous to hirsutellous. The petiole is to circa 0,5mm long. There is a gland within axil of pinnae, stipitate, to 0.5mm long.

The inflorescences are rudimentary 1 (2)-headed racemes. The peduncles are 6-12mm long, with indumentum as on branchlets. The globular heads are 5-7mm in diameter, 25-50-flowered, golden in color. The bracteoles are acute to short-acuminate. The flowers are 5-merous.

The pods are flat, 1-4cm long, 3-5mm wide, glabrous or puberulous. The seeds are longitudinal to transverse, oblong to elliptic or circular, 1.5-2.5mm long greyish brown, not mottled.

The Genus: Acacia Subgenus: Phyllodineae Section: Pulchellae having the following characters: Trees or shrubs, sometimes prostrate. Branches unarmed. stipules normally present and scarious, rarely spinose. Leaves bipinnate or more commonly modified to polymorphic phyllodes, rarely reduced to scales or absent. Inflorescences simple or racemose, sometimes paniculate; flowers arranged in heads or spikes; heads without an involucel on the peduncle; flowers without a gynophore.

Subgenus Phyllodineae contains about 950 species, the majority of which are confined to Australia; it is estimated that there are at least 50 additional, as yet undescribed species.

This group is endemic in south-western West-Australia.

SPRING Soak the seeds in warm water of 210,2°F for 2min. Change by ambiant water for 12h. Sow the seeds at 5mm depth in the Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 59-68°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 2-3 weeks.
The average seed weight is 250,0 per gram (0,004g).
The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 10 years.

Take the cuttings at the end of spring, soak them in a hormonal preparation for cuttings. Plant them in a substrate rich in perlite and keep them sufficiently moist in sealed freezer bags.
