Description
This species is introduced in Australia. It occurs along the coast south from around Adelaide in South Australia, in the Melbourne area in Victoria and on the northern coast of Tasmania and the Furneaux Group in Bass Strait. It is native to Europe, also introduced into North America. It is commonly located just above the high tide zone.

Botanical Description
The plants are rhizomatous or caespitose. The culms are 66-75cm high. The leaves are non-auriculate. The basal leaf sheath margins are free. The ligule is 0.5-1.25mm long, truncate, hyaline to membranous. The blade is 26.4-38.5mm long, 1.5-5mm wide, flat or involute, adaxially densely scabrous to puberulous, with margins smooth.
The spikes are to 31cm long, open, with 9-11 strongly spreading spikelets are not imbricate on rachis. The peduncle is 11-14cm long, glabrous. The rachis is disarticulating at joints so spikelets fall with attached segment, with lateral angles glabrous. The spikelets are 19-27mm long, with 5 or 6 bisexual florets.
The lower glume is narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic, 13-16mm long, 2.5-3.25mm wide, carnose to cartilaginous, asymmetrically slightly keeled towards apex or dorsally flattened, 10-12-nerved. It has bisexual florets. The lemma is narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic and asymmetrical, 15-19mm long, 2.5-3mm wide, obtuse or emarginate. The anthers are 6-8mm long.
