Description
It is a mallet endemic to Western Australia, known only from two areas, near Beaufort Inlet and Fitzgerald River National Park. The species is named after Ken Newbey (1936-1988). Ken Newbey was a farmer, botanical collector and ecologist from Ongerup in Western Australia. He was the first to collect this species. It grows in well-drained near-neutral loams or clays which overlie soft rock.

Botanical Description
It is a mallet to 8m tall. The lignotuber is absent. The bark is smooth throughout, mottled yellow-brown and grey to creamy yellow, shedding in flakes. The branchlets are lacking oil glands in the pith.
The juvenile leaves are not seen. The adult leaves are alternate, petioles 0.5-1cm long. The blade is narrowly lanceolate to narrowly elliptical, 4-8cm long, 0.5-1.5cm wide, base tapering to petiole, margin entire, apex pointed, rarely rounded and apiculate. The side-veins are at an acute or wider angle to midrib, reticulation moderate to dense, broken, intramarginal vein close to margin, oil glands obscure or scattered, very irregular, island and intersectional.
The inflorescence is axillary unbranched, peduncles down-turned, strap-like, 3-5.5cm long. There are usually 7 buds per umbel, rarely 3 or 9, sessile to subsessile. The mature buds are elongated, 5.2-6cm long, 1.1-1.6cm wide, scar present (outer operculum shed early), operculum horn-shaped, circa 3-4 times as long as the hypanthium, dilated basally, smooth. The stamens are erect, anthers narrowly oblong, versatile, dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits. The style is long and straight, the stigma is rounded, 3 locules, the placentae each with 6 vertical rows of ovules. The flowers are yellowish green.
The fruit is on down-turned peduncles, sessile, campanulate to obconical, 1-2.7cm long, 1.8-2.8cm wide, dehiscing by elliptical holes formed when the 3 valves split along the sutures but remain connected by the style base. However, this connection eventually weathers and the holes coalesce, disc covering the valves. The seeds are black, 1.5-4mm long, ovoid to angularly so, dorsal surface shallowly reticulate, a narrow flange on at least part of the margin, hilum ventral.

The Genus: Eucalyptus Subgenus: Symphyomyrtus Section: Bisectae Subsection: Hadrotes Serie: Lehmannianae Subserie: Liberae having the following characters: The cotyledons are coarsely bisected, buds have an operculum scar, a long (inner) operculum and erect stamens, fruit are large, thick-rimmed and held rigidly. There are 12 species in subsection Hadrotes, two species have oil glands in the pith whilst 10 species lack these oil glands.
Useful plant
It is an excellent nectar-producer, but the timber has no commercial use. This ornamental species has potential for greater cultivation in gardens and parks and for shade and shelter.

Sowing instructions
SPRING Select the largest and most fleshy BLACK seeds. Sow the seeds at 2mm depth in the Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 64-72°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 3-6 weeks. The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 10 years.
The average seed weight is 746,3 per gram (0,00134g).
