Description
It is a medium-sized stringybark tree known only from coastal areas south of Bruthen and foothills north and east of Orbost, Victoria, on poor sandy soil. This species is named after James Andrew McKinty (1916-1999). James McKinty was a forester with the Forestry Commision of Victoria. He was District Forester at Orbost for many years. He collected this species in 1947, recognizing it to be different from other local stringybarks.

Botanical Description
It is a small to medium-sized tree to 30m tall. The bark is rough to the small branches, fibrous, stringy, grey to red brown. The stem is rounded in cross-section.
The juvenile leaves are sessile or shortly petiolate, opposite for 3 to 5 nodes then alternate, oblong to elliptical to ovate, 4.5-10.3cm long, 3.5-9cm wide, margin entire to slightly irregular, discolorous, green to blue-green. The stem, petiole and lamina are scabrid until nodes 9 to 11 on seedlings, on field coppice only the lowest few (up to circa 6) pairs are scabrid. The crown is blue-green. The adult leaves are alternate, on a petiole from 1.3-2.8cm long. The blade is broadly lanceolate to lanceolate to falcate, 8.5-23cm long, 1.7-5.5cm wide, base oblique, concolorous, slightly glossy or dull, green to blue-green. The side-veins are acute, sparsely to moderately reticulate, intramarginal vein parallel to and well removed from margin, oil glands small, island or obscure.
The inflorescence is axillary unbranched, peduncles 0.8-2.2cm long. The buds are in umbels of 7, 9 or 11, pedicels 0-0.5cm long. The mature buds are diamond-shaped to ovoid, 0.7-0.8cm long, 0.3-0.5cm wide, green, smooth or scurfy, with slight longitudinal angles, scar absent, operculum conical. The stamens are irregularly flexed, all fertile. The anthers are reniform to cordate, versatile, dorsifixed, dehiscing by confluent slits. The style is long, stigma tapered, 3 or 4 locules. The flowers are white.
The fruit is on pedicels from 0-0.3cm long, cup-shaped to hemispherical or truncate-globose, 0.5-0.7cm long, 0.9-1.3cm wide. The disc is level or slightly raised, 3 or 4 valves, near rim level or slightly exserted. The seeds are dark brown, 1.5-3mm long, pyramidal or obliquely pyramidal, dorsal surface smooth, hilum terminal.
E. mackintii is distinguished among the stringybarks by the bluish green crown. It differs from E. macrorhyncha in having a conical (not beaked) operculum and fruit with a more or less level (not prominently raised) disc. Both E. globoidea and E. agglomerata differ in having crowded clusters of fruit and in having coppice growth scabrid for at least 0.5m. E. baxteri differs from E. mackintii in having a green crown, obovoid buds without angles and fruit usually with a raised disc but, like E. mackintii, has juvenile growth scabrid for few nodes.

The Genus: Eucalyptus Subgenus: Eucalyptus Section: Capillulus Serie: Pachyphloius having the following characters: Trees with coarsely fibrous 'stringy' bark, shortly emergent oil glands adorned with obvious radiating hairs on stems and leaves of seedlings and juvenile growth (these oil glands appear stellate), axillary inflorescences with buds having only one operculum, flowers with reniform anthers, ovules in two rows, and more or less pyramidal seeds with a distinctly terminal hilum. The adult leaves of all stringybark species have sparsely reticulate venation.

SPRING Select the largest and most fleshy BROWN seeds. Sow the seeds at 2mm depth in the Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 59-68°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 3-6 weeks. The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 10 years.
