Description
It is a medium-sized to tall tree endemic to south-eastern Tasmania in montane forests on sites subject to some waterlogging on peaty, sandy soils, e.g. on Mount Wellington, Bruny Island, Tasman Peninsula. This species is named after Robert MacKenzie Johnston (1845-1918). Robert Johnston had a keen interest in botany and geology.

Botanical Description
It is a tree to 50m tall. It forms a lignotuber. The bark is smooth throughout or with some persistent, fibrous, grey bark on base of trunk. The smooth bark is yellow to orange-brown or greenish. The stem is square in cross-section and prominently winged, warty.

The juvenile leaves are opposite and sessile to subsessile for many pairs, orbicular to ovate, 2.5-6cm long, 1.3-4.5cm wide, margin usually crenulate, base tapering to rounded, apex rounded at first then pointed on later leaves, glossy, green. The adult leaves are alternate, petiole 1.5-3cm long. The blade is broadly lanceolate to lanceolate to falcate, 6.5-15cm long, 2-4cm wide, flat or undulate, base tapering to petiole, margin entire or subcrenulate, concolorous or slightly discolorous, glossy, green, side-veins greater than 45° to midrib, densely to very densely reticulate, intramarginal vein well removed from margin, oil glands island or intersectional.

The inflorescence is axillary unbranched, peduncles stout, 0.3-1cm long. There are 3 buds per umbel, sessile (rarely with 0.2cm pedicels). The mature buds are oblong to ovoid to diamond-shaped to obovoid, 0.8-1.1cm long, 0.6-0.9cm wide, green or red-green, usually slightly warty, angled longitudinally, scar present, operculum rounded to flattened and umbonate or beaked. The stamens are mostly inflexed, anthers cuboid to oblong, versatile, dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits (non-confluent). The style is long, stigma blunt, 3 or 4 locules, the placentae each with 4 vertical ovule rows. The flowers are white.

The fruit is sessile, obconical, hemispherical or campanulate, 0.7-1cm long, 0.9-1.3cm wide, often angled longitudinally, disc raised-convex or level, or slightly descending, 3 or 4 valves, strongly exserted. The seeds are dark brown or black, 1.5-3mm long, ovoid or flattened-ovoid, dorsal surface smooth, hilum ventral.

It is closely related to E. vernicosa and E. subcrenulata. It is considered by some botanists as a lowland form of E. vernicosa.
Member of
The Genus: Eucalyptus Subgenus: Symphyomyrtus Section: Maidenaria Subsection: Euryote Serie: Semiunicolores having the following characters: A large group of species more or less restricted to south-eastern Australia, characterised by bilobed cotyledons, simple axillary inflorescences, buds with two opercula, stamens with versatile anthers and flattened seeds with a ventral hilum. Within this section, Eucalyptus johnstonii with four other species, forms series Semiunicolores having smooth bark, subcrenulate and strongly glandular juvenile leaves opposite for many nodes, a crown of green, densely and finely reticulate adult leaves, buds in threes, and small fruit with relatively prominent valves.
Useful plant
The pale pinkish brown timber is used for joinery and associated products, and for poles and pit props in mines. The flowers provide moderate nectar and pollen yields. It has an attractive trunk and bark and, frequently, a compact pyramidal form. Useful in cool temperate regions for broad landscape planting, such as parks, roadsides, large gardens and farms.

Sowing instructions
AUTUMN Select the largest and most fleshy BLACK seeds. Keep in refrigerator at 39°F for 4 weeks in dry condition. Sow the seeds at 2mm depth in the Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 68-77°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 3-27 weeks. The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 10 years.
The average seed weight is 247,5 per gram (0,00404g).
