Eucalyptus ebbanoensis       0

It is considered a shrub or a small tree. It occurs with a single stem or sometimes several stems resulting from a lignotuber. Its bark is sometimes rough at the base and smooth on the upper part of the trunk, gray to gray-brown in color, which flakes off in summer and reveals its new brown bark in autumn. The young branches are reddish.

The juvenile leaves are opposite then alternate, petiolate, ovate and pubescent. The adult leaves are 8-11cm long and 1.5cm wide, mostly alternate, sometimes opposite, narrowly lanceolate to finely falcate. Dull green to medium glossy.

The inflorescence is simple, axillary, composed of 3 flowers, with a peduncle from 1cm long. The buds are 1cm long and 0.8cm wide, pyriform, petiolate. Hemispherical operculum. The flowers reach a diameter of 1.8cm, the stamens are white to cream, abundant and remarkable.

The fruits are 1cm high and so wide. They are cup-shaped, petiolate, red-brown in color, glossy, with exserted valves. The seeds are retained in the fruit, the black ones are smaller than the brown ones. These germinate easily.

The Genus: Eucalyptus Subgenus: Eudesmia Section: Ebbanoenses having the following characters: Cotyledons reniform in shape and folded and clasped in the embryo, juvenile leaves usually with stellate hairs, buds with the calyx fused to the corolla and evident as four small teeth at the apex of the bud—within the subgenus Eudesmia, Sections Limbatae and Complanatae have free calyx lobes evident as four small teeth around the midline of the bud—stamens arranged in four bundles, and the presence of oil glands in the pith of the branchlets. Within this taxonomically complex subgenus, Eucalyptus ebbanoensis is the only species in section Ebbanoenses, distinguished by the almost complete lack of tertiary veining in the adult leaves and ovoid seeds that lack a marginal flange.

This species is valued for its honey, ideal for cultivation, it also has potential for wild spaces in arid and semi-arid areas.

SPRING Select the largest and most fleshy BLACK seeds. Sow the seeds at 2mm depth in the Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 64-72°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 3-6 weeks. The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 10 years.
