Eucalyptus diptera       0

It is a mallee. It has no lignotuber. It is sometimes branched very close to the ground. Its bark entirely smooth greenish gray to bronze or coppery, it presents oily sheen.

The juvenile leaves are always petiolate, alternate, broadly lanceolate. They are 5 to 8cm long and 0.7 to 2.5cm wide. They are dull, bluish green in color on the lower nodes, then green higher. The adult leaves are alternate, petiolate (petiole 0.7 to 1.7cm long), blade linear to narrowly lanceolate, they measure 6 to 12 cm long and 0.7 to 2cm wide. Base tapering to the petiole, entire margin, green and glossy. Moderate to dense reticulation. The intra-marginal vein is fairly close to the margin.

Unbranched axillary inflorescence, almost absent peduncles. 3 buds per umbel, sessile or pedicelled (flattened and short pedicel from maximum 0.2cm long). At maturity the ovoid buds are 0.8 to 1.5cm long and 0.6 to 1.1cm wide, their angles form wings (hence its epithet) from the pedicel and up to the join of the hypanthium and the operculum. Scar present. Stamens inflexed, anthers narrowly oblong, versatile, sub-basifixed, dehiscent longitudinally. Long and straight style, blunt stigma, 4 to 5 locules. Its flowering takes place from June to November. The flowers are creamy white, pale lemon to lime green.

The fruit is sessile or pedicelled (pedicel 0 to 0.2cm long). Cup-shaped to hemispherical 'winged'. It measures 0.5 to 0.9cm long and 0.9 to 1.5cm wide. 4 to 5 valves. The seeds are pale gray to medium brown, 1 to 2mm long, ovoid to flattened ovoid or even cuboid or polygonal. Dorsal surface deeply and closely fissured, toothed margin and ventral/terminal hilum.

The Genus: Eucalyptus Subgenus: Symphyomyrtus Section: Bisectae Subsection: Glandulosae Serie: Contortae having the following characters: The buds have two opercula, the cotyledons are bisected and the branchlets have numerous oil glands in the pith. Within this subsection Eucalyptus diptera belongs to a small well known group, the gimlets (series Contortae), a group notable for the slender fluted, twisted shiny trunks. The gimlets are further recognised by very irregular island oil glands in the leaves and irregularly and deeply fissured seed-coats.

It is a fast-growing tree used for this purpose as a windbreaker, but it is also appreciated for its colorful honey.

SPRING Select the largest and most fleshy Straw-Colored seeds. Sow the seeds at 2mm depth in the Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 64-72°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 3-6 weeks. The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 10 years.
The average seed weight is 259,1 per gram (0,00386g).
