Description

Botanical Description
This mallee forms a lignotuber. Its bark is rough on the first 2 meters of the trunk. Then it becomes loose, and flaked into ribbons, or it is sometimes smooth throughout, from gray to black-brown, or silver gray to pale brown-gray.

The stem is rounded in cross section. The juvenile leaves are always petiolate, alternate, ovate to lanceolate. They are 2.5 to 7cm long and 1.5 to 2.5cm wide. Its color is dull, blue gray not glaucous. The adult leaves are 5.5 to 10cm long and 1 to 2.2cm wide, they are alternate and petiolate 0.7 to 2cm long, the blade is lanceolate. The base is tapering to the petiole. The margin is entire, the apex is pointed, concolorous, initially dull bluish green and maturing brilliant green. The reticulation is sparse, the intra-marginal vein is present or obscure.

The inflorescence is unbranched axillary, the peduncle is narrowly angled to flattened and widest apically, it is 1.5 to 4.7cm long, composed of 7 buds per umbel, pedicels up to 0.8cm long. The mature bud is elongated asymmetrically fusiform. The bud measures 2 to 3cm long and 0.5 to 0.7cm wide. The scar is present. The operculum is horn-shaped, 2 to 3 times the length of the hypanthium. The stamens are erect. The anthers are oblong, versatile, dorsifixed, dehiscing by longitudinal slits, the style is long and straight. There are 4 or even 5 locules. Cream to pale yellow or yellowish green flowers appear in May, July and August.

The fruit is turned downwards, pedicelled from 0.4 to 0.8cm long, usually cylindrical or less commonly obconical. The fruit measures 1 to 1.5cm long and 0.7 to 1.2cm wide, 4 (or 5) valves present. The seeds are blackish-brown, 1 to 2mm long, ovoid, flattened-ovoid, shallowly reticulated dorsal surface, ventral hilum.

This Eucalyptus resembles Eucalyptus occidentalis var occidentalis and differs in its non-marshy habitat, its lower height, its fruit usually cupular to cylindrical, and its distribution further east.
Member of
The Genus: Eucalyptus Subgenus: Symphyomyrtus Section: Bisectae Subsection: Glandulosae Serie: Erectae Subserie: Pedicellatae having the following characters: The buds have an operculum scar, cotyledons are bisected and branchlets have oil glands in the pith. Within this subsection Eucalyptus aspratilis belongs to a subgroup, series Erectae subseries Pedicellatae recognised by the glossy green leaf surface, leaves with many oil glands but not obscuring the secondary venation, peduncles long and flattened or terete, inflorescences spreading to pendulous and buds with a long operculum and erect stamens arising from a narrow staminophore.
