Description
It grows in swampy areas and on stream banks. It is widespread on coast, tablelands and western slopes, west to Pilliga Scrub and Warrumbungle Range. It occurs in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, Australia. The species epithet means shining.

Botanical Description
This is a robust tussock-forming perennial with short thick rhizome. The culms are 30-150cm high, trigonous, smooth, to 10mm in diameter. The leaves are strongly septate-nodulose, often longer than culms, 5-40mm wide.
The inflorescence is compound or decompounds with 6-10 primary branches to 20cm long. The spikes are ovoid to cylindrical, 1-3cm long and in diameter. The involucral bracts are leaf-like, 5-10 much exceeding inflorescence, to 150cm long. The spikelets are terete to flattened, numerous per spike, 4-20mm long, 1-2.5mm wide in side view, 4-10-flowered. The rachilla is broadly winged. The spikelet is falling as a unit. The glumes are acute, with sides 2-4-nerved, 4-6.5mm long, red-brown. There are 3 stamens. The style is 3-fid. The nut is trigonous, very narrow-ellipsoid, about two-thirds as long as glume, 2.5-3mm long, circa 0.7mm in diameter, dark grey-brown to blackish.

Useful plant
Can be grown as a bog plant or in a wet position in the garden. Can also be grown as an emergent aquatic.
