Description
Clarkia unguiculata is a widely distributed species in California, and occurs throughout much of the southern two-thirds of the state in appropriate woodland habitats at an elevation of 0-1500m.
Botanical Description
The stems are erect, 30-100cm, glabrous, glaucous. The leaf petiole is 0-10mm. The blade is lanceolate to elliptic or ovate, 1-6cm.

The inflorescences are open racemes, sometimes branched, axis erect. The buds are pendent. The floral-tube is 2-5mm. The sepals are reflexed together to 1 side, green to dark red, sparsely to densely puberulent abaxially, with longer, straight, spreading hairs to 3mm. The corolla is rotate, petals lavender-pink to salmon or dark reddish purple, triangular or diamond-shaped to suborbiculate, 10-25mm, claw slender, equal to or longer than blade, entire, rarely somewhat expanded at base. It has 8 stamens, unequal, outer anthers red, inner smaller, paler. The ovary is with hairs as on the sepals. The stigma is exserted beyond anthers.

The capsules are 15-30mm. The seeds are brown, 1-1.5mm, tuberculate, crest inconspicuous.

SPRING Sow the seeds on the surface of Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix and pouwder with 2mm Charcoal powder between 64-72°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 1-2 weeks.
