Botanical Description
The rhizome is short. The shoots are densely tufted. The culms are erect, terete to trigonous, smooth below, scabrous above, 40-80cm long, circa 1.3mm in diameter.
The leaves are exceeding culms. The blade is 2-4mm wide. The leaf sheath is yellow-brown. The ligule is retuse. The inflorescence is drooping, 40-90cm long, usually longer than culm, with 1-8 spikes per node. The lowest involucral bract is shorter than the inflorescence. The spikes are long-pedicellate, drooping at maturity, distant, 2.5-5.5cm long. The uppermost spike is usually gynaecandrous with long male portion, occasionally androgynaecandrous, rarely male. The lower spikes are gynaecandrous with short male portion, or female.
The glumes are acute to obtuse, shortly mucronate, yellow-brown to red-brown. The female glumes are 3.5-5.5mm long. The perigynia (utricles) are narrow-obovoid, prominently several-nerved abaxially (faint adaxially), 4.5-7mm long, 1.5-1.8mm in diameter, hispid above, pale brown. The beak is 1.5-2.5mm long, with apex 2-fid or split. The anthers are circa 3mm long excluding appendage to 0.2mm long. The style is 3-fid. The nut is obovoid, trigonous in cross section, yellow-brown.

Sowing instructions
SPRING Soak the seeds in ambient water for 12h with a SmokeDisk. Keep in refrigerator at 39°F for 12 weeks in humid substrat. Sow the seeds on the surface of Well Drained Seed Sowing Mix between 64-72°F. During germination keep the substrate moist and in daylight. The seeds germinate in 4-6 weeks. The viability of the seeds, kept under good conditions, is 5 years.
The average seed weight is 588,2 per gram (0,0017g).
