Description
This is the common lady fern, her specific epithet does not refer to her gender, but to its tender and fine aspect reminiscent of femininity. It is a very common taxon, found throughout Asia, and from North America to Mexico and North Africa. The common lady fern is present in the most of France.
It colonizes moist, shady places such as streambanks, valleys, ditches and forests, and is found uncovered at higher altitudes. It is a large plant with leaves that can exceed 1m in height, short petiole, little scaly and finely cut blade. The sori are long, thin and arched, protected by a persistent indusia with fringed edges preserving the fertile organs of desiccation. It is a very polymorphic species.
The ladyfern is well known to English gardeners for its exuberant foliage and its great resistance in cool and humid environment.
Experiences
Faced with the difficulties of cultivation encountered by this taxon fond of cool and humid atmospheres, we placed it outside under the pines, but the plants seem to be in decline and do not look as they should anyway.
