Asplenium marinum 0
Author: Carl von Linné (1707-1778)Family: Aspleniaceae
Genus: Asplenium
English name: Sea Spleenwort
Zone: Mediterranean
Description
You can find it from southern Norway to North Africa and Macaronesia (The group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean West of Africa and Europe, consisting of the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde Islands). It always attaches to the siliceous cliffs near the ocean or the sea. Most frequently in Brittany and England. An Asplenium which is little known in cultivation, it is resistant to salt, it likes the spray, the northern exposure and it requires a siliceous substrate.
Experiences
What a magnificent plant, once divided, the spines are elongated, with rounded serrated edges, arranged alternately on both sides of the rachis! The leaf is thick, dark green and shiny and contrasting well with the dark granite cliffs where it settles.
Asplenium marinum Observed in Spain by Godo (license)
Botanical Description
Evergreen fern, 4 to 10 inch. Zones 8 (with appropriate pampering) and 9. Erect rhizome. The marginally winged stipes are deep purple and usually up to one-third of the frond length. Once-pinnate kelly-green blades are succulent and lanceolate with 20 to 25 pairs of stalked pinnae. Sori are easily recognized by their herringbone, linear pattern with an indusial flap.
