Arachniodes standishii       0

Author: (Thomas Moore (1821-1887)) Jisaburo Ohwi (1905-1977)
Family: Polypodiaceae Subfamily: Dryopteridoideae
Genus: Arachniodes
English name: Upside-down fern
Zone: Asia

Description
Commonly called ‘upside down fern’ in English, its fronds indeed give the impression of having returned! This impression probably comes from the prominent ribs (compared to the pinnules).

Originally from mainly Korea, it is common in the mountains and often associated with Cryptomeria (coniferous) forests.

It is a tufted fern, with fronds divided in 3, chiseled appearance, up to 80cm in length. The spores mature particularly late in the season (early winter in northern France) when the fronds are already starting to turn brown.

One of the most beautiful specimens of Arachnoides, resistant to cold winters (Zone 6 -17°C to -23°C), easy to cultivate in humid undergrowth in an acidic humus soil, earth of heather for example.
